The Lafarge Mountsorrel quarry in Leicestershire,
England, is the largest as well a being one of the most modern in
Europe. The quarry area currently in use approaches one kilometer
in diameter (approximately 785,400m²). The quarry is capable
of producing 10 million tonnes per annum with reserves of 180 million
tonnes.
The environmental impacts of the site is carefully
managed and is hardly visible to the local communities. In 1995
Mountsorrel Quarry received the prestigious 5 star BACMI environmental
award followed by a Gold Award in 1996.
Finished product is used by customers in
many areas including: railways, roads and construction.
